Jodha, Raja

Jodha, Raja
(?-1489)
Son of Rao Ranmal, a scion of the Rathor ruling family of Marwar, who had joined the service of the ruler of Mewar and was murdered by the nobles there in 1438. After the mur-der of his father, Jodha returned to Marwar. During the next 15 years, he fought to drive away the Mewar troops and brought the whole of Marwar under his control. In 1459, he founded Jodhpur as his new capital. Under Jodha's rule, Marwar emerged as a powerful rival of Mewar. Even Rana Kumbha, who was initially hostile, was forced to make peace with Jodha. Subsequently, Kumbha's successor, Rana Udai, settled the boundary of the two principalities by transferring Sanbhar and Ajmer to Marwar.
